As demand surges for apps to run on iOS, Android and whatever operating system will power the next wave of smart mobile devices, companies are facing a dearth of mobile development talent. For IT professionals with programming skills, that gap represents a fresh opportunity to embark on a career makeover.

To put the demand in perspective, consider that Apple racked up $1.78 billion in app sales in 2010, and global mobile app sales are forecast to hit $4 billion this year, according to IHS, a market research firm in Englewood, Colo.

First Rate Exchange Services Limited (First Rate), the UK’s largest provider of white label foreign exchange services, is deploying a Vodafone One unified communications solution that will not only lead to faster, more agile ways of working at the company, but also contribute to a projected £450,000 saving in communications costs alone.

First Rate is rolling out the Vodafone UK solution across its three offices in and around London. This will enable hot-desking – making more efficient use of existing office space – and give employees the flexibility to work effectively wherever they are, reducing the need for travel.

When Palm proudly launched the Pre back in 2009, running the all-new webOS, I’ll admit I was impressed. By the time it went on sale in the UK, some considerable time later, I was invited to go and sit through a demonstration ahead of being given my review unit.

O2 was very proud to have bagged the exclusive, but with the exception of the iPhone, the network had been making some pretty poor decisions on handset procurement at the time. I’ll admit that I was guilty of making a few snide remarks about O2′s exclusive meaning everyone else had simply said ‘no thanks’ to Palm.
